Attack the base, not the space

This is an Advance French, Lputian-style structure. White has more space with , but that space depends on the pawn on . Black’s pieces are coordinated around attacking that base.

  • The queen on attacks .
  • The knight on attacks .
  • The knight on attacks .
  • White’s bishop on has been recruited as a defender.

The detail that changes the plan

White’s a3–b4 expansion stopped the older pressure against b2, but those moves were not free. White delayed development and created a new queenside hook on .

Black is not trying to win d4 immediately. The goal is to keep White tied to it until development, a queenside break with , or the central break makes the pressure tell.

The practical question

Can Black increase the pressure before White finishes development and challenges the knight on f5?

This is why the position is instructive: the strategic target is familiar, but White’s queenside expansion changes which supporting plan Black should choose.
