Chessonics

Useful analytics, with clear boundaries.

What we collect

When you visit Chessonics, we create a random identifier for that visit. We record the pages visited, named interactions such as opening a study or clicking a checkout button, video starts and completions, whether video sound was turned on, time played with sound on or muted, timestamps, a broad device category, viewport width, and a referring page without its query string. If you arrive with advertising campaign tags, we also store their source, medium, campaign, and content values with that visit.

What we deliberately do not collect for analytics

We do not store your IP address, use analytics cookies, or record text entered into forms. The random visit identifier is kept only for the current browser session and is replaced when a new browser session begins. After you create or enter an account, an essential secure cookie keeps that device signed in for up to one year; it is not used for advertising.

Why and for how long

We use this information to understand whether the site and product are useful, find confusing screens, and improve the signup flow. For an ad-tagged visit, the first intentional action, such as a click, manually starting a video, turning on video sound, or moving to another page, triggers an email alert to the site owner with the campaign details and action. Autoplay alone does not trigger an alert. Alerts do not include an IP address or personal identity. Raw visit and event records are automatically deleted after 90 days.

Information you choose to provide

When you enter your email to start, we create your account, securely link the games and current board position from that browser, and sign the device in. We email a one-time link so you can choose a password for later visits or other devices. If you set a password, we store only a one-way password hash. We also store secure session records, saved games and repertoires, and your most recent app position. We never store your password in readable form.

While you are signed in, we also keep a 90-day product-activity history associated with your account. It records sign-ins, app pages visited, game imports, completed computer games, study generation, and use of AI coaching features. This helps us operate the service, support users, and understand which product features are useful. This activity history does not contain your AI chat text, PGN game notation, or chess-position data.

If you select a repertoire file before entering your email, it is uploaded immediately as a temporary draft. The browser keeps a random claim token in session storage—not a cookie—so the draft can be attached to your account when you submit your email. Unclaimed drafts expire after 24 hours.

Repertoire details and uploaded files are handled separately from anonymous site analytics. Payments are processed by the payment provider; Chessonics does not store your card or payment-account credentials.

Email choices

Essential account emails, including password and security messages, are used to operate your account. Marketing email is separate and is sent only when you choose to receive Chessonics learning tips, product updates, and offers. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops marketing email while leaving essential account messages enabled.
